Outdoors:
- Water early or late in the day.
- Watering in the morning or evening reduces evaporation loss.
- Choose drought-tolerant plants.Native or low-water landscaping (xeriscaping) can dramatically cut outdoor usage.
- Install drip irrigation systems, these deliver water directly to plant roots, minimizing waste.
- Adjust sprinklers properly. Make sure they’re watering plants—not sidewalks or driveways.
Indoors:
- Fix leaks promptly.
- A dripping faucet or running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons a month. Check regularly and repair as soon as you notice issues.
- Install low-f fixtures. Swap in low-flow showerheads, faucets, and dual-flush toilets. These can cut water use by 20 to 60% without sacrificing performance.
- Shorten showers. Even reducing your shower by 2 to 3 minutes can save gallons each time.
- Turn off taps when not in use. Don’t let water run while brushing teeth, shaving, or scrubbing dishes.
- Run full loads only. Dishwashers and washing machines are most efficient when full. Avoid half-load cycles.
